Who needs to enroll in Medicare?
- If you will need Medicare primary now or in the future, it is advised that you enroll when you are about to turn 65.
- If you are receiving Social Security and turning 65, you will automatically get your Medicare card about three months before turning 65.
- If you have large group insurance (20+ employees) and are working more than 30 hours per week there is no urgency to enroll as Medicare will be secondary to the group. This means Medicare will not be used and you will not need to enroll in Part B (Medical) at this time.
- If you have individual or small group insurance (19 or less employees), you need to enroll 3 months before the month you turn 65 and you will need both Part A (Hospital) and Part B (Medical). Early enrollment is advised as that allows time to correct possible documentation issues that might arise.
